How to Feel Full, Not Fat

Do you find that you never feel satisfied after a meal or just an hour or so later you are reaching for a snack to pick you up? Well, we're here to help with some feel-full strategies. Granted there are foods that can boost your feelings of fullness, but how, when and where you eat your meals can also have a bearing on your full factor too.    Here are 10 ways to make you feel fuller for longer.

Keep eating simple
People can eat more when they dine in company or with the television on because they become distracted as to what exactly is going into their mouth. Make sure mealtimes are all about the food; focus on it entirely and you'll feel full sooner. Avoid fast-paced music too, this can increase the speed you eat, resulting in a clean plate before your body is able to recognize it is full.

How to feel full, not fat - focus on food

Smell and chew
When you eat make sure you give your meal a good sniff as concentrating on the smell of your food as well as the taste also switches on satiety signals. Secondly, chew, chew, chew, and chew some more. Some of the hormones needed to send the satiety signals to the brain are released by your chomping.

Go for bulky and moist
The rationale behind the bulky and moist rule is pretty straightforward; simply the more air and water in food the quicker it will fill you up. So, in terms of food swaps, have vegetable soup rather than a pasty, plain air-popped popcorn instead of crisps and grapes in place of raisins.

Wait after fat
If you do have a meal with a high-fat content then make sure you allow time for that feeling of fullness to come. It can take longer for sense of satiety to come from a fatty meal compared to meal high in protein for example, so allow time for the feeling of fullness from the fat to kick in.

Get enough sleep
When your body is deprived of sleep it produces more ghrelin and less leptin. These are the hormones that are involved in the regulation of appetite; ghrelin is produced largely in the stomach and accelerates your appetite, while leptin decreases appetite as it's the hormone that signals satiety.

Get hydrated
The daily recommended amount of water to drink is around the eight glasses mark, but many of us don't get anywhere near that amount and as a result when we feel hungry, it is often because we're actually thirsty. Drink a glass or two of water before a meal, and when you do eat, the food will feel more filling.

Get a smaller plate
People tend to fill their plate however big it is, and most of us eat until it is empty. And the aim of getting a 'clean plate' makes us more likely to override the satiety signals that stop us eating. So, swap your normal plate for a slightly smaller one, and you'll find your 'full' switch will flip a little sooner.

Choose fiddly foods
If you eat foods that take a little time and effort to eat, this will allow time for your body to recognize the feeling of fullness. Good examples of fiddly foods are corn on the cob, a crunchy salad or fish with bones, these types of foods force you to eat more slowly and help you to feel full quicker.

Eat an apple before your meal
Apples help to promote a feeling of fullness and research has shown that eating an apple 20 minutes prior to eating a meal reduces the amount of food that was consumed at that meal. So, including an apple for your daily snack will not only contribute to one of your daily recommended fruit or veggie portions but the fiber will fill up your stomach too.

Be natural
Try to eat food that is as natural as possible as most manufactured foods tend to be very energy-dense which means they contain more calories or kilojoules bite for bite. However, raw fruit and vegetables take a lot of chewing and occupy a lot of room in your stomach so they fill you up much more per bite.

Super Sleek Hair
Maintain a good straightening iron with titanium plates which, like ceramic plates, heat up evenly and quickly. Thus, there are no damaged spots developed that can harm the hair, leaving the hair shinier and frizz-free. The advantage of these types of plates is the durability factor. These last longer than the others. The natural properties of the hair are not lost, thanks to the generation of infrared.

Great waves
Curling irons make creating luscious waves a snap. No need to perm to achieve the luscious locks you so crave. A perm requires maintenance. So stay loyal to your curling iron, which doesn't have a clamp (also known as a curling wand). Just wrap hair around the wand and hold the end with your fingertips. This will also eliminate that bump that often comes along with having to twist regular curling irons. Take a one-inch piece of hair and start wrapping it around the iron and let hair sit for about 30 seconds before unwinding. Continue curling the rest of your hair in one-inch sections. When you're done, spritz with hairspray and admire your wow waves!

Bouncy, full of body hair
After shampoo, apply volumizing mousse to damp roots and ends. Blow dry hair out smooth with a round brush, then wrap random pieces in various directions down the barrel of a curling iron or Velcro rollers for maximum hold and bounce.

Free of split ends
As much as possible, avoid shampoos containing harsh ingredients. Rebonding and perming your hair can excessively also dry or damage hair causing fracture and breakage creating numerous split ends. However, a little care can go a long way in controlling this damage and even reversing it. You don't have to cut your hair to control split ends. All it requires is consistent keratin and deep conditioning treatments. Be aware of the condition of your hair and take active steps to improve it.

Cut and color
When it comes to choosing hair color, I consider what shade will enhance her overall look and what type of treatment works best for her hair texture. Her ideal haircut depends on her face shape while her hair color should be based on a combination of factors including her natural hair color, eye color, and most importantly the skin tone. She'll look best in a hair color that complements her natural skin tone. Tone is used to describe the warmth or coolness of a color. In general, warm colors have yellow, peach, or red undertones and cool complexions have pink, violet, or blue undertones.

Stay Stylish While Pregnant

Maternity wear has come a long way. Gone are the dowdy, matronly outfits. Nowadays, maternity fashion has become a booming business, and designer brands like Esprit—and even celebrities, such as Jessica Simpson—have come out with their own maternity line. With this array of choices, pregnant women have no excuse to make it on Fashion Police. And yet many of them still do (paging Kim Kardashian!). Ideally, first-time moms don’t “show” until they’re in their second trimester. Many women find key pieces in their wardrobe that still fit them, such as blouson tops with empire waists, or kimono sleeved shirts. If you’ve got a bun on the oven, read on for these tips on how to still stay fashionable. By Maui V. Reyes for Yahoo! Southeast Asia

1. Embrace your body.
To say your body is going through massive changes over the next nine months is an understatement. Your hands and feet start to swell, your belly grows, and your cleavage struggles to pop out of your top. Don’t resist these changes: embrace them! Seems like a no-brainer, but many pregnant moms end up wearing clothes that don’t fit them well because they struggle to buy clothes they feel “should” fit.

2. Get the right dress length.
If you can, don’t wear ankle-length dresses: they tend to look frumpy and dull. A maxi dress in a nice color and print is acceptable, but try to stick to dresses that fall right by or above the knee. As for style, empire waists are super flattering for pregnant bodies, because it creates the illusion of a waist when, well, you clearly don’t have a defined one.

4. Stretch Jersey is your best friend.
Jersey fabric is great because it’s breathable and doesn’t wrinkle easily. Invest in items made with jersey stretch fabric, such as leggings. Pick up multiple pairs of black leggings—they’re versatile enough to wear to work and everywhere else. And please, resist the urge to live in sweatpants! Maternity pants are really comfortable, and some even come with waistbands that offer back support (you’ll most likely need it by the eighth month.

6. Accessorize!
Wear dangling earrings to emphasize the slope of your neck, and don chunky necklaces with your low neckline-tops to draw attention from your bust line upward. Try to use long necklaces, as these “elongate” the torso.

8 Easy Tips To Make You Look Slimmer

By Tatin Yang for Yahoo! Southeast Asia – Tue, Apr 9, 2013 2:47 PM PHT

Feeling "blah" and bloated? Does everything in your closet seem to make you look flabby? We asked insiders from the fashion industry—-a photographer, a model, a makeup artist and stylists—to share their tricks on how to look slimmer for those days when you feel nothing seems to fit you.

Change Your Stripes
This summer's trend features all kinds of stripes. Celebrity stylist Margaux Romero-Alampay teaches you where to draw the line. "You can wear figure-hugging summer stripes but vertical or diagonal lines make for a more flattering silhouette." The size of the stripes matters, too."Thinner stripes are also more slimming than thick ones," she adds.

Invest In Secret Helpers

Stylist and blogger Alyanna Martinez recommends keeping a secret weapon under your sheath. "Smoothening shapers are a good investment. Spanx is the best for me but it can be quite pricey, so look around the department stores for a cheaper alternative." Alyanna's slimming godsend is a black smoothening control tube which she uses on models when at work and even for herself. "It can be used under any garment for an instant slimming effect and is also perfect as a slip if you're wearing something sheer," she says. "The right undergarments can make or break the look, even if you're super fit or super skinny," she adds.

My Oh, Maillot

Hitting the beach? Alyanna recommends strutting in the sand in a maillot. "It's great that the maillot is back in fashion, so women don't have to dread the unforgiving bikini!" she exclaims. A maillot or a one-piece swimsuit with interesting details help you look sexy at the beach but helps conceal any trouble area. "A deep plunge neckline or a low back can help draw the attention away from typical trouble areas like thighs and the tummy," she adds.

Picture Yourself Slim
Photos don't lie (except when there's Photoshop involved) but photos don't have to tell the entire truth either. Fashion photographer Pat Dy shares the following tricks to help you look slim in your Facebook photos. "Never face your body in a frontal position to the camera and never drop your arms in a straight line beside your thighs. This adds bulk," he shares. Dy recommends angling your body instead in a quarter turn to the left or right (depending on your good side). "Putting your hands on your thighs and bending your elbows away from your waist helps create a slimmer silhouette," he adds. Contrary to popular belief, loose clothing can actually make you look bigger, especially in photos. "Baggy clothes tend to bring you down, and make your posture stooped," adds Dy. The extra fabric can also make you look voluminous so look for figure-skimming clothing in forgiving fabrics that drape well without clinging to jiggly bits, like jersey.

Nude Attitude
Model Kelly Misa-Fernandez shares tricks she's learned from modeling through the years that goes beyond the basic "black is slimming" trick. "Nude heeled sandals or pumps can make you appear longer and taller, thus slimmer," she says. "Look for a shoe style that doesn't cut you off at the ankles to make you look long-legged," she adds.

Create Length

No one ever thought giraffes were fat and for good reason. "Elongating your neck and chest area makes you look slimmer so make sure to have V-neck shirts and button-down shirts in your closet," shares Kelly. "A long, striking necklace worn with a plain dress/top helps elongate your upper body, too," says Margaux.

Accessorize Strategically

Accessories not only look pretty, they can contribute to your sartorial slimming strategy. "Summer trends are always about light colors and flowy pieces, which are not always slimming," says Margaux. If you want to stay on trend but still look trim, accessories are key to create shape and structure to flowing styles. "A bright-colored thin belt added to a flowy piece can help accentuate the waist," adds Margaux.

Sculpt Your Way To Slim

Makeup artist Jigs Mayuga says using sculpting creams underneath foundation or BB cream helps slim down your face without anyone being the wiser. Using a sculpting cream helps slim down your visage minus the harsh contour lines that look very dated. "Apply the cream on the hollows of the cheeks and along the jawline," Mayuga advises. This will help define your face and add shadows that can help make your face look slimmer, especially in pictures.

Eight Gadgets You Should Have in Your Bag

By SC Chua for Yahoo! Southeast Asia – Tue, Apr 9, 2013 10:32 PM PHT

You’re constantly on the go, hard working, and confident. Which is why you will need the right gadgets to help make modern life less complicated and more functional for you! Here are eight important gadgets we think all new age girls (that’s you!) should have.

1. Tablet

iPad, Galaxy, Playbook–whatever model, you should have one. This way, you can stay connected with your emails, social media, notes and calendars for both work and personal life. Plus, you can also have some downtime while on the go with a round of everyone’s favorite game, Candy Crush. And let’s not forget being able to surf the internet and read your favorite magazine wherever, whenever.

2. Smartphone
You’re a smart gal, which is why you need a smartphone to help you get on top of things! We’re not just talking about making calls, sending text messages or writing emails. With a smartphone, you can download so many applications to help you get discounts, check weather and traffic conditions, buy movie tickets and read reviews on a new restaurant. The possibilities are endless.

3. GPS

If you spend a lot of your time in a car, then by all means, invest in a Global Positioning System (GPS). Sure, your phone may already have a map app installed but a proper GPS like a Garmin or SatNav won’t run out of battery so quickly and has the latest maps installed. Never get lost again with your GPS.

4. Digital Camera

Who doesn’t love snapping a photo (or 1,000)? Get a digital camera that’s small enough to fit in your bag but big on functions so you have it all with just one touch. From beauty filters to making HD videos, digital cameras these days come packed with features so you’re spoilt for choice.

5. MP3 Player
You know it’ll come in handy, especially when you’re working out at the gym or commuting from work. It can even be used when you’re cleaning the house (wouldn’t mind dancing to a few tunes while mopping!). Load it up with your favorite tunes and sing away.

6. Pedometer

Trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle? Then get yourself a pedometer, which tracks activities like walking and running. Wear one during your run or even on a daily basis so you can record how many steps you make in a day – 1,000 is the magic number for a healthy lifestyle.

7. Portable Alarm

Don’t leave your safety up to chance. Make sure you are equipped with a portable alarm you can trigger should you come face-to-face with danger. Most portable alarms are small (but they pack in a punch when it comes to producing that ear-piercing distress alert), making it a convenience to tote one everywhere you go. No excuses!

8. Hard Disk
Because where else are you going to store those precious photos, favorite songs, movies and videos? Get yourself a 1TB hard disk so you can store whatever you want in it.

4 Ways To Brighten Up Your Skin Instantly

Everybody wants a bright, healthy and natural glow to their complexion. But if your skin steers towards the dull side, fear not – help is here. Check out our tips on how you can brighten up your skin instantly.

1. Out with the old, in with the new
One of the reasons for dull skin? Dead skin cells accumulating on your skin’s surface, which prevents new skin from showing through. To get rid of dead skin cells, exfoliation is key. This essential step in your skincare routine helps to slough off dead skin cells instantly so your skin appears brighter and healthier.

For daily gentle exfoliation, you can try using a washcloth daily. Be careful not to scrub too hard as this can aggravate skin, especially sensitive and acne-prone skin. Look for soft and smooth granules as these are gentle on your skin and pick ingredients like alpha and beta hydroxyl acids to further enhance your exfoliation step. When using your exfoliator, rub your fingers in small and gentle circles. Stay clear from the delicate eye area and always remember to moisturize after exfoliating.

2. A little makeup helps
We all know that makeup can do wonders… and in the case of brightening your skin, it’s just what you need. The trade secret in brightening your skin with makeup? Using a highlighter. This illuminating product is what celebrities and makeup artists use to make eyes appear bigger, cheekbones higher, and your skin flawless and brighter. With its shimmery finish, highlighters reflect the natural light that hits your face so that your contours appear brighter.

The three main areas to use a highlighter on? Your cheekbones and temples, your eyes and the Cupid bow (the area above your upper lip). Don’t go overboard as it can result in a streaky finish. Instead, dab and blend your highlighter on these areas using either a brush or your fingertip. Pat in small circles to get an even finish.

Word of advice: Highlighters accentuate features, even your not so attractive ones. So avoid using it on dark under-eye circles, red or dry skin. Apply after your foundation and set with your powder makeup.
3. Keep on spritzing
Dry skin can result in dullness. But if you want an instant skin brightener, you can concoct a “magical” potion, keep it in a spritzer, and use it to mist your face regularly.

For a refreshing cooling face mist to keep your complexion bright, try this vitamin C concoction: Boil a cup of distilled water with chunks of orange peels and two tablespoons of fresh rosemary leaves. Simmer for 10 minutes, cool and strain the liquid. Add three drops of lime or lemon essential oil, stir and transfer to a spray bottle. Store in the refrigerator to give it that icy zest.

To spritz, hold the bottle six inches away from your face. Spritz and remember, blot off the excess with a tissue after a minute so the water doesn’t evaporate, leaving skin dry instead.
4. Boost your blood circulation
Ever wondered why your skin looks most radiant and healthiest after a workout at the gym? That’s the effect of good blood circulation, which instantly gets your skin looking fresh. Poor blood circulation results in the lack of oxygen being carried to your skin, which makes it lackluster and dull.

So to wake up your skin and give it a bright healthy glow, especially if you’ve had a late night sleep, simply give it a quick splash of cold water. And while you’re at it, give your face a quick massage. After applying your products, make a fist with your hand and use your knuckles to massage the skin in small circular motions. This will help to stimulate blood flow to the skin, allowing it to look radiant.
